3 Tips to Effectively Use a Planner While in College

Adjusting to that busy college life is not always easy, and utilizing a weekly planner or schedule may help balance some of that stress.  Buying a new planner is exciting, but can also be intimidating! There's so many different ways to use planners and schedules, but ultimately it is what works best for you while in college.  Here are four tips to effectively use a planner while in college mentioned in the book, "Secrets of College Success", by Lynn F. Jacobs.

#1 Make sure you find a planner that works best for you!

Its can be a handwritten planner or electronically kept planner on your tablet.  I prefer a handwritten planner, but with that comes what size do you want the planner to be? Do you want it to be dated already or do you want blank squares so you can add the dates because you do not need a planner for every day of the week?

I prefer to use a planner that's big so I can have tons of space to write all of my thoughts down, and I also use blank squares because on the weekends I don't usually need to write in my planner.

#2 Keeping your planner Organized

USE COLOR CODING!!!

While using a weekly spread to organize your goals, assignments, and weekly tasks use colors to code specific categories.  Not only does it help you stay even more organized, it also LOOKS GREAT! You can use colorful pens, gel pens, highlighters, markers, whatever you prefer! Also, you can add in sticky notes and side notes for to-do list to help stay organized.

#3 Check your planner often, have fun, and don't let it take over your life!

College life gets hectic, sometimes to the point where I become obsessive with my planner and spend more time working on my planner instead of my actual tasks.  Remember to take it one day at a time and what you don't get done that day an rollover into the next day or next week.  Your planner or schedule should help you and not hurt you.
